Yerevan residents grateful to US authorities for recognizing genocide

Until late at night on April 24, in Yerevan, people kept coming to the "Tsitsernakaberd" Memorial Complex to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

Early in the morning, the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923 in the Ottoman Empire were commemorated by President Armen Sargsyan, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Catholicos of All Armenians Garegin II, as well as high-ranking officials and politicians. The commemoration events were attended by a delegation of the French Senate headed by Speaker Gerard Larcher, Secretary of State of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Jean-Baptiste Lemoine, as well as ambassadors of foreign countries.

On April 24, US President Joe Biden, following the US Congress, recognized the Armenian Genocide. The Turkish MFA has treated the Joe Biden's statement as populism; and the official Baku accused the American leader of distorting the historical truth.

In Yerevan, the participants in the mourning ceremony responded to the recognition by the American President Joe Biden of the 1915 Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. In particular, members of the National Democratic Pole, whose visit to the Memorial Complex coincided with the US President's statement, marched from there to the American Embassy in order to express their gratitude.
