UN experts call on Azeri authorities to release Gusein Abdullaev
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Arrests has demanded to immediately release Gusein Abdullaev, a former Azerbaijani MP, who is serving his term in a colony.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 1, 2019, the court sentenced Gusein Abdullaev, a businessman and a former Azerbaijani MP, to six years in prison. He insists on his innocence. On April 12-17, Abdullaev was on a dry hunger strike, as a result of which his health condition has deteriorated sharply.
The above UN Working Group states in its conclusion that Abdullaev's arrest was illegal because of the absence of legal grounds, says a statement posted on April 27 on the website of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, which was translated by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
"We've received reports of deterioration in Abdullaev's physical and mental health," the experts have stated calling on Azerbaijani government to immediately release Abdullaev.
The statement was signed by independent experts, special rapporteurs and working groups. They are a part of the so-called "special procedures" of the Human Rights Council within the UN system, the message explains.
