"Immortal Regiment" action announced in Georgia amid pandemic

Marches in memory of those who perished in the Great Patriotic War will be held in Georgian cities on May 9 with observance of the social distance, organizers have announced.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on May 9, 2019, the "Immortal Regiment" march was held in Tbilisi along with a counter-action with anti-Russian slogans, in which five people were detained. Activists of the "Immortal Regiment" and participants of the counter-action who booed them called each other traitors of Georgia's interests.

The community of "Immortal Regiment" coordinators was formed as a voluntary community of like-minded people. By May 2013, about 120 cities joined the campaign. Subsequently, the geography of the movement expanded; and the action had coordinators abroad. The "Immortal Regiment" action began in Russia as a people's initiative, but the authorities could not avoid the temptation to bureaucratize such a mass movement.

As of May 6, the total number of COVID-19 infected people in Georgia reached 317,719. 4227 people have died since the start of the pandemic, according to the "StopCov.ge" website.
