Azerbaijani activist, Alizamin Salaev stops hunger strike after meeting colony boss

On August 6, Alizamin Salaev, an activist of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has ended his hunger strike after the colony bosses assured him that in the coming days he would be transferred to a medical unit or prison hospital.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Salaev, who is serving his term after charged with libel and insult after he had posted a video criticizing a policeman, reported beatings in the colony after he went on a hunger strike in solidarity with Tofig Yagublu. In February, 2021, Salaev's relatives stated that Salaev's health condition had deteriorated sharply, but he received no medical care. On August 6, the court refused to apply early release to him.

According to Alizamin's son, after receiving assurances from the colony boss, his father stopped his hunger strike. "However, according to my father, if his hospitalization isn't solved, he will restart his hunger strike. Since he started his protest, his condition has deteriorated even more," the son has added.

Rufat Safarov, the executive director of the NGO "Defence Line", has noted that "Salaev's action nevertheless attracted public attention."
