ECtHR awards compensation to mother of murdered resident of Ingushetia

Russian authorities failed to conduct an efficient inquiry into the death of Muslim Kuriev, a resident of the village of Plievo, who was killed in a counter-terrorist operation (CTO) in 2014, and are responsible for his death, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled. Muslim's mother named Laila was awarded compensation in the amount of 60,000 euros.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 22, 2014, a CTO regime was introduced in the Ingush village of Plievo; two suspects of participating in an illegal armed formation (IAF) – Bashir Dyshnoev and Muslim Kuriev – were shot dead, and an FSB officer was wounded. Human rights defenders assert that Kuriev fell victim to an extrajudicial execution.

Laila Kurieva has failed to achieve an inquiry into her son's murder of in Russia. "Seven and a half years have passed since my son was brutally murdered ... The worst thing is that Muslim was killed by law enforcers, not by criminals," she has stated.

  • Compensation decrease for illegal prosecution violates rights of KBR resident

The court ruling, which awarded Madin Gubzhokov compensation of 30,000 roubles for unlawful criminal prosecution, is incomparable with the moral harm caused by the actions of Azamat Kyaov, a former law enforcer. The amount is ridiculous and should be appealed against, lawyers and human rights defenders have stated.
