Tortured Grozny resident fears extradition to Russia

Salman Mukaev, a native of Grozny, was forced to flee Chechnya after being tortured. Now, he is in Armenia; in Russia, he has been declared wanted and fears that he could be extradited.

Salman Mukaev had to leave Grozny, his hometown and his family after policemen tortured and beat him up forcing to confess to having sexual contacts with men," Mukaev said in an interview with the "Nastoyascheye Vremya" (Present Time)*. He said that Chechen law enforcers had forced him to sign a cooperation document; however, on the same day he left Chechnya.

He went to Moscow via Ingushetia, then to Belarus and then to Armenia, Mukaev has told his story. From Armenia, he tried to get to some European country; however, at the border checkpoint he was stopped by the policemen and informed that he had been put on the federal wanted list in Russia. Mukaev fears for his safety, because if he is extradited to Russia, he will be "tortured to death" there, the "Ekho Moskvy" wrote on October 25.

* The organization is included by the Russian Ministry of Justice (MoJ) in the “Register of non-profit organizations performing the functions of a foreign agent”.
