HRC “Memorial” recognizes Chechen Djumaev as a political prisoner

Said-Mukhammad Djumaev, a native of Chechnya, sentenced to five years of imprisonment for fighting with law enforcers at a protest action, was convicted on political grounds. This was announced by the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Memorial”. The human rights defenders demand to reconsider the Djumaev’s case.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on August 19, Mikail Markhiev, better known under his former name Said-Mukhammad Djumaev, was sentenced to five years of imprisonment. He was found guilty of confronting law enforcers on January 23 at a rally in support of oppositionist Alexei Navalny.

In a video posted on social media, Said-Mukhammad Djumaev is fighting off the law enforcers’ truncheons. According to the prosecutors’ version, the young man inflicted many blows on two OMON (riot police) fighters and a policeman.

The HRC “Memorial” considered Said-Mukhammad Djumaev a political prisoner, since the young man was imprisoned for exercising his right to freedom of assembly. The video depicts that none of the law enforcers fell because of the Djumaev’s blows, the human rights defenders state in their press release. According to them, the term of imprisonment does not correspond to the actions of which Said-Mukhammad Djumaev was charged.

According to the “OVD-Info”, on January 23, at least 64 protesters suffered from the law enforcers’ actions in Russia, but not a single criminal case was open. Criminal proceedings are instituted only against activists.
