Activists achieve better accessibility in Makhachkala polyclinics

The Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan has supported Sabrina Alieva, an activist, who demanded to rebuild the ramp at the entrance to the Makhachkala polyclinic in accordance with the regulations. After the trial, the situation with the infrastructure for disabled people in polyclinics has improved, Ziyautdin Uvaisov, the head of the human rights NGO "Patient's Monitor", has stated.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Sabrina Alieva, who is a wheelchair invalid, had obliged through the court the "Makhachkalavodokanal" (the company in charge of water supply and sewage in Makhachkala) to install a ramp in its building, after which she received a too large bill for water supply. Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan, got interested in the conflict and called on the Mayoralty asking to organize a public apology from "Makhachkalavodokanal" to Sabrina. The company officials met Alieva, apologized to her, promised to build a ramp and withdrew all the claims for payment for water supply.

Sabrina Alieva said that in December 2020, together with the "Patient's Monitor", she launched a project aimed at monitoring the accessible environment at state institutions. "The situation has improved during this year; many institutions have improved or built ramps," she has noted.

According to her story, among the cases won in court there is a ruling obliging to install a ramp in the children's hospital.

State institutions begin reacting to appeals only after filing a lawsuit in court, Ms Alieva has added.
