Charges against Azerbaijani oppositionist Alyshov toughened

Razi Alyshov, a member of the Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan (PFPA), has his charges toughened; now, he faces up to 12 years in prison under an article on large-scale drug dealing. The activist claims that he was forced to confess under torture.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Razi Alyshov was detained on May 28 in Ganja on suspicion of drug dealing. The PFPA announced political motives for his persecution. On May 30, a court in Ganja arrested Alyshov for two months.

According to Natig Adilov, the head of the PFPA press service, now Alyshov is accused under the article on the sale of narcotic drugs on a "large scale."

"Razi said that he was tortured by the police; and because of the received blows, he became hard of hearing ... He said that he was forced to testify in front of a video camera under the threat of even more sophisticated dirty actions," Mr Adilov has explained, adding that he is sure that Alyshov is being persecuted because of his political activities.

The National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) has condemned a new wave of repressions unleashed in Azerbaijan.
