Advocate comments on Insa Lander's attempt to escape to Georgia
An attempt of Insa Lander, a blogger from the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR), to escape to Georgia may have to do with the judicial practice on similar cases – for the entire time this article was applied, there was not a single acquittal, Dmitry Zakhvatov, an advocate, believes.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that Insa Oguz, a blogger from Baksan, known under the pseudonym Insa Lander, escaped from house arrest. On June 12, the blogger tried to leave for Georgia through North Ossetia, but Georgian border guards did not let her through, and the blogger remained on the neutral zone between the two countries. On June 16, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) explained that the Georgian laws allow denying entry for those who are being prosecuted for terrorism.
On December 9, 2021, Insa Lander was detained and placed under house arrest on suspicion of aiding and abetting terrorist activities.
On June 20, Dmitry Zakhvatov, an advocate for Insa Lander, a blogger from the KBR, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the whole Lander case is an example of special services' hyper-reaction on the people "who profess Islam and are under the influence of Islamic fundamentalists' subculture."
As for the escape, the advocate has suggested that it could be provoked by the review of the application practice of the article of the Criminal Code incriminated to Ms Lander. "We've examined all such cases and saw that for the entire period of application of this article there was not a single acquittal. Only in one case a person was sentenced to a conditional imprisonment; in all other cases, the convicts were sentenced to various real prison terms. Apparently, in this regard, she had decided to leave the country," Mr Zakhvatov has stressed.
