Georgian Ombudsman demands to investigate threats received by Gogashvili
The Special Investigation Service should verify information about threats received by Soso Gogashvili, the former deputy chief of the State Security Service, from a top-ranking law enforcer, Georgian Ombudsperson Nino Lomdjariya states.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on August 11, advocates reported that arrested Soso Gogashvili had received threats from the head of one of the law enforcement bodies with the demands that he was to give the necessary testimony.
Soso Gogashvili was detained on July 16. Earlier, former deputy head of the Georgian State Security Service stated that he had information about the rigged voting at the 2021 elections. Before his arrest, Gogashvili managed to hand over documents about electoral frauds to a reliable person.
Georgian Ombudsperson Nino Lomdjariya requested the Special Investigation Service to investigate the information about threats received by Soso Gogashvili in Rustavi Prison No. 12, the “News-Georgia” reports today.
“The Ombudsperson of Georgia believes that the Special Investigation Service should launch an investigation in order to verify the information in a timely and effective manner, in accordance with the law,” the “News-Georgia” quotes the Ombudsperson as stating.
In particular, according to the Ombudsperson of Georgia, the prison staff should be questioned and the records from the video surveillance cameras installed in the Rustavi prison should be examined. The Ombudsperson has already addressed the Special Penitentiary Service of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of Georgia with a request to archive the video records. Furthermore, according to the complaint, “the law enforcement bodies within their competence” must ensure the safety of members of the Soso Gogashvili’s family, the “News-Georgia” reports.
