Beslan hostages report rehabilitation problems

Larisa Kudzieva, who received multiple wounds during the terror act, because of a delay in payment failed to get to Germany for surgery. The terror act victims and their relatives also need psychological help, Fatima Kusova, a former hostage, is sure.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that for the absence of a law on terror act victims in the Russian legislation, the money allocated from the state budget to Beslan terror act victims is not enough to treat and rehabilitate all the former hostages, activists of the "Beslan Mothers" and "Voice of Beslan" have stated.

On September 1, 2004, militants captured 1128 hostages in the gym of School No. 1 in Beslan. The operation to free them ended on September 3, 2004. As a result of the terror act, 334 people perished, including 186 children; other 810 people received various wounds.

During the assault of the Beslan school in 2004, Larisa Kudzieva received serious wounds. "My wound was grave – a mine-explosive one. I was wounded during the assault; this bandit threw a grenade in our direction when we were liberated from the canteen. Half of my face was practically gone; the facial bones and soft tissues were badly damaged; my teeth were knocked out; and my right arm was torn to shreds. To date, I have had over thirty surgeries," she said.

German doctors from Göttingen and Berlin are ready to make those complex surgeries that can help Larisa. The cost of treatment is 25,500 euros. "I was supposed to go there on July 5; but our Ministry of Social Affairs delayed the payment of money to me; therefore I couldn't fly there in time. The surgery was postponed till August 31. And my visa expired on August 24," Larisa has complained.

The terror act victims and their relatives need help in treating not only their physical but also the mental health, Fatima Kusova said at a meeting in the "Lampa" art space.

She believes that only a few persons have managed to overcome the psychological trauma received at the Beslan terror act. According to Fatima, some psychological help was rendered to the victims, but it was not systemic.
