Social network users link growth in divorces in Dagestan with receiving benefits

Dagestan has faced a sharp increase in the number of divorces – it almost doubled within a year, the republic's government has announced. Many residents of Dagestan divorce fictitiously in order to apply for child benefits, commentators on the Telegram channel have suggested.

At the sitting of the Dagestani government, Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov, the Prime Minister, said that 9133 divorces were documented in Dagestan in 2021 against 5302 divorces in 2020. There are four marriages and three divorces per 1000 republic's residents. In the Premier's opinion, this negative trend should be analyzed by the relevant ministries. As noted by Mr Abdulmuslimov, traditionally, it was not typical for residents of the republic to ruin families – this was considered a shame. Today, the younger generation has a different attitude towards marriages, says the website of the Dagetani Govt in the release posted on September 10.

The commentators to the Govt's post in the Telegram channel have suggested that the increase in divorces has to do with the desire to receive the benefits due for a child in an incomplete family.

"No one ruins families. The divorce is fictitious with the aim to receive the benefits that they have begun paying to single mothers," the user Sergey Kobzarev has written.
