Fines imposed on participants in anti-Semitic action in Cherkessk

All those detained at the action against refugees from Israel in Cherkessk have been released. The court has fined the participants in the anti-Semitic action; and the police issued warnings.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 28, a rally was held in Cherkessk, the participants of which called not to allow refugees from Israel into the republic and to organize a collection of aid for Palestine. The participants in the rally claimed that there were 500 of them; and they plan to apply for a new rally. The police drew up reports of administrative violations against 34 protesters.

Law enforcers have warned the detainees about responsibility in case of a repeated unsanctioned rally.

"The warnings looked even like threats. They said that they would open criminal cases," said one of the protesters.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, a Cherkessk resident, said that she did not notice anti-Semitic sentiments in her environment before the latest escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. "Before these events, I didn't notice any aggression towards Jews. On the contrary, everyone treated them well," she said.

On October 26-29, mass anti-Semitic actions took place in three republics of the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD). In Cherkessk, protesters demanded not to allow visitors from Israel in; and in Nalchik, the Jewish cultural centre was burned down. In the Dagestani city of Khasavyurt, after reports in social networks that refugees from Israel had been accommodated in a hotel, hundreds of people gathered there; and riots broke out at Makhachkala Airport due to reports about the arrival of a plane carrying passengers from Israel. As a result, more than 20 people received wounds, including nine policemen. Law enforcers detained 60 persons.
