ECtHR recognizes Dagestani advocate as victim of torture by law enforcers

The European Court of Human Rights has awarded compensation of 12,500 euros to Magomed Magomedov, an advocate from Dagestan, who complained about torture by law enforcers in Makhachkala.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that on September 26, 2019, Magomed Magomedov, an advocate from Dagestan, filed a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) reporting that he was beaten by law enforcers after he had refused to leave his client alone with the field investigators. Magomed Magomedov called the law enforcers’ actions torture.

The ECtHR has recognized that the article of the European Convention on Human Rights prohibiting torture and cruel and degrading treatment was violated with regard to Magomed Magomedov, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reported.

Earlier, the Forensic Medical Examiner’s Office recorded bruises on the advocate’s shoulders which appeared “as a result of repeated pressure.” However, the advocate was refused in institution of a criminal case, and the Kirov District Court of Makhachkala and the Supreme Court (SC) of Dagestan approved the above decision.
