In Vienna, rally participants demand to investigate death of prisoner from Chechnya

In Vienna, about 50 activists held a rally with the demand to conduct an investigation into the death of a native of Chechnya in an Austrian prison. The rally participants called on for stopping the deportation of natives of Chechnya to countries where torture and extrajudicial killings await them.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that members of the Chechen Diasporas, including in Austria, have repeatedly held actions of solidarity with their fellow countrymen. So, in July 2023, a rally was held in Vienna against the persecution of refugees from Chechnya. The rally participants criticized the use of violence against refugees in Austrian prisons and their deportation to Russia.

According to Roza Dunaeva, an organizer of the rally, the reason for the protest action in Vienna was the news about the death in prison of a young native of Chechnya, the “Kavkaz.Realii”* reports.

“We stood up for the rights of prisoners, including the protection of the rights of refugees, and called for an objective investigation into the murder. We also demanded to stop the deportation of refugees to countries where they will be subjected to cruel treatment,” Roza Dunaeva said.

According to her, since 2007, at least eight natives of Chechnya have perished in Austria because of illegal methods and violence.

Austria, Switzerland, and other European countries that are loyal to the Russian authorities often make decisions to deport natives of Chechnya. This was reported in October 2023 by Ruslan Kutaev, the president of the Assembly of Caucasian Nations. “For some reason those countries ignore human rights violations in Russia and Chechnya,” Ruslan Kutaev noted.

  • Religion experts explain motives for militants’ attacks on synagogue and temple in Dagestan

Ayats (verses) of the Koran, references to which were left by attackers at a synagogue in Derbent, are interpreted by the extremists to justify their confrontation with Jews and Christians, Leonid Syukiyainen and Dmitry Mikulsky point out. The experts suggest that the date of the attack on the Orthodox temple was chosen by the militants because of the Christian holiday celebrated on that day.
