Dagestani resident fined 5000 roubles for kidnapping a girl
In Makhachkala, a court closed a criminal case instituted against local resident Gadjimurad Gadjimuradov, accused of kidnapping his acquaintance.
The custom of bride kidnapping remains quite common in the Caucasus, especially in Chechnya, Dagestan, and Ingushetia. The main reason for bride kidnapping in the Caucasus is not a parental ban on marriage, but economic difficulties, as relatives of a girl and a guy may agree on a kidnapping in order to save on wedding ceremonies. However, in a significant proportion of cases, kidnappings occur without the consent of the girls.
The Sovetsky District Court of Makhachkala reports on its official website that the resident of the capital of Dagestan came to the store where the victim worked and used threats to force her to leave with him. Later, the car was stopped by law enforcers and the kidnapped girl was released.
An investigator has indicated that Gadjimurad Gadjimuradov committed a crime for the first time, admitted his guilt, and also apologized to the victim. The man faced up to five years of imprisonment, but finally, he was fined 5000 roubles.
