Student fined for solo picketing in Elista

A court in Elista (the capital of Kalmykia) has fined Dolores Nimgirova, a local student, by 5000 roubles, treating her solo picket held after Alexei Navalny's death as an offence.

Dolores, a student of Kalmyk State University, has been fined under Part 5 "Violation by a participant of a public event of the established procedure for holding a meeting, rally, demonstration, procession or picketing," the Elista City Court has reported.

According to the court, on February 18, 2024, Nimgirova held a 20-minute solo picket in Elista near the Seven Days Pagoda complex, and also "attached posters with text onto columns near the pagoda," that is, she violated the established order of picketing.

According to the law on public events in Kalmykia, the Seven Days Pagoda complex "as a structure having religious value, is one of the places where holding any meetings, rallies, processions and demonstrations is prohibited," the court has stated.
