ECtHR recognizes violation of rights of activists in Southern Russia
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) obliged the authorities of Russia to pay compensation to activists from the Krasnodar Territory and the Rostov Region for persecution and arrests.
The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that the ECtHR continues to make decisions on complaints filed by activists from Southern Russia, although Russia has ceased to be a party to the European Convention on Human Rights. So, on June 14, the ECtHR declared unlawful the detentions of activists at protest rallies in Rostov-on-Don, Sochi, Anapa, and Stavropol.
The court awarded compensation of 4000 euros to Daniil Gogolev from Novorossiysk, who seven years ago was arrested for 15 days after a campaign rally in support of Alexei Navalny. The ECtHR found the Daniil Gogolev’s right to a fair trial violated.
The ECtHR also awarded spouses Konstantin Zykov and Tatiana Zykova compensation of 5000 and 4000 euros, respectively, declaring their detention and arrest in the spring of 2018 unlawful.
Konstantin Zykov and his spouse were detained in Sochi on March 17, 2018. An advocate claimed that the police used violence during the arrest of the spouses.
The ECtHR also ordered the authorities of Russia to pay 7500 euros to Rostov activist Tatiana Sporysheva, who faced violence and threats from the police during a search in March 2022.
