Ingush law enforcer sentenced to 4.5 years of imprisonment for beating a detainee

Sulumbek Yandyrkhanov, a former employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), has been sentenced to four and a half years of imprisonment for beating a detained resident of Magas. The above information is reported on the Telegram channel of the “Travmpunkt” human rights project.

The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that in January 2022, in Magas, the police detained local resident Timur Derbichev on suspicion of illegal possession of drugs. After the detention, the man was beaten. In August 2023, a court sentenced former law enforcer Amiran Merzhoev to four years of conditional sentence in the criminal case on beating the detainee. In December, the court of appeal toughened the punishment for Amiran Merzhoev and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment in a penal colony.

According to the public prosecutor’s version, while detaining the suspected resident of Magas, Sulumbek Yandyrkhanov struck the man about 15 times with his hands. Later, when the detainee was taken to the police department, Sulumbek Yandyrkhanov again used force against him.

Activists of the human rights project, which lawyers defended the interests of the victim in court, recall that the resident of Magas, who was detained and beaten by law enforcers, is a pensioner of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of Ingushetia and a father of five children. The man is diagnosed with serious illnesses. In May, he collected 1.5 million roubles from the MIA through the court as compensation for moral damage.

The victim reconciled with Armiran Merzhoev, who had earlier been sentenced in the same case, with the participation of elders of the teips (family clans), since the former law enforcer admitted his guilt and repented.
