HRW calls Russia to clear Georgia of unexploded bombs

The Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called Russia to urgently clear the Georgian territory of unexploded bombs, which are a threat to the peaceful population.

On August 15, the HRW stated that it has evidences that Russia had used cluster bombs in peaceful districts of Georgia.

"These very dangerous unexploded bombs are scattered over farms, roads and footpaths" in Georgian cities," Mark Garlasko, an analyst of the HRW, has declared. As he said, if Russia fails to start clearing the territory, many peaceful residents can be lost, the Reuters has reported today.

The RIA "Novosti" reports, referring to the press service of the Southern Regional Centre of the Russian Ministry for Emergency Measures of Russia, that the Centre's sappers have conducted a special risk operation named "Leader" and detected and liquidated 939 explosives in South Ossetia, one aviation bomb among them.

They have also examined the territory of kindergartens and schools in Tskhinvali.

Besides, six water samples were taken from the city water supply system to be checked for heavy metals. The examination has shown that the water is fit for use.
