March to take place in Yerevan on Human Rights Defence Day
On December 10, the International Human Rights Defence Day, the Armenian Committee for Defence of Political Prisoners and Victims of Repressions will hold a march against injustice and illegal actions with a demand to release the requirement of clearing of activists of opposition.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told at the Committee that the march will start at 1:00 p.m. from the square at the monument Martiros Saryan. The activists of the march want to demand release of all the oppositionists still in custody and punishment of the organizers of the dispersal of demonstrators on March 1, 2008.
"The authorities of Armenia, contrary to the serious challenges that the country is facing and the appeals of the international human rights organizations, continue doing everything possible for preventing their country from the comeback to the democratic way of development. This situation can be changed only as a result of persistent fight for the respect of human rights," said the Committee.
Melissa Brown, wife of the former political prisoner and ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Arzumanyan, said in her conversation with the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that protest actions yield positive results: "Our two-year-long struggle has made a certain effect. But still, we have 17 political prisoners; and their issue is unresolved."
