In Abkhazia, action of memory was held on International Day of Missing Persons

On August 30, the International Day of the Disappeared was commemorated in Abkhazia. According to the current information, as a result of the 1992-93 war with Georgia, about 200 people, including soldiers and civilians, have gone missing in Abkhazia.

According to various data, in the Park Slavy (Park of Glory) in the city of Sukhumi, remains of 40-80 people, whose identities have not been established until present, were buried. Mothers of disappeared persons hope that these remains will someday be identified and their children will be among them.

The Commission on Missing Persons, which has been conducting negotiations with the Georgian side for years, has failed to achieve any significant information about the disappeared persons.

Among the disappeared the well-known Abkhazian poet Taif Adjba and Abkhazians, who lived next door to him, are listed. They were brought out of the house, forced into a bus and driven to some unknown destination in October 1992 yet. Since then, their relatives know nothing about them.

In memory of the citizens of Abkhazia, who have gone missing during the Georgian-Abkhazian war, a drinking water fountain was built in the Sukhumi waterfront. On August 30, action of memory, organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross together with the Movement of Mothers of Abkhazia and the Sukhumi Youth House, was held. In the evening, candles were lit at Teatralnaya (Theatre) Square.
