Residents of Novomikhailovsky believe that compensation will not cover the damage caused by flood

Compensations of 10 and even 150 thousand roubles will not be enough to cover the damage caused by the flooding, according to the residents affected by the flood in the resort village of Novomikhailovsky, Tuapse District of the Krasnodar Territory. They also note that payments could be made more promptly.

Olga Seryodkina lives with her 84-year-old mother in a private house in Rechnaya Street in Novomikhailovsky. In 2010, their house was also hit by the flood; then, they received 60,000 roubles of compensation.

"Hardly have we begun recovering – and here you are: all fell into disrepair again. The doors got swollen; and the appliances are inoperative," said the woman.

According to her story, on August 22, the water was 175 cm high at their house. "Water was level with the window, my mother said – come on, open the door; but I said: now I open the door, and water will rush into the room! It was terrible," said Seryodkina. "Then, I called my daughter in Krasnodar; and she came with her son in a taxi at five in the morning. I could hardly keep my mum; and water was still coming. Finally, I swam out of the window in that oily water."

Outside, she met a unit of the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) and asked rescuers to save her old mother, who was holding afloat in the room with the help of a chair and sofa.

"The rescuers came back and said that they were shouting and calling – nobody answered; water was close under the ceiling. I was shocked. In the morning my neighbour comforted me; and then we found my mother," Olga continued. The 84-year-old woman was taken to the cardiology ward of the Tuapse District Hospital because of her heart problems.

The promised compensation of 150,000 roubles may not cover all the losses; however, people are happy with this sum. "Even so; when you've got nothing, that's good too," said the woman.

Vyacheslav Lazarev lives a few yards away from the Seryodkins. "The water was about two meters high; we saved on the second level," he told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. "When the water came flowing, my wife and I gathered documents and put them on the couch, hoping that only little water will enter the house; and then climbed to the second level."

But the water level went up; and he had to dive for the box with documents. Fortunately, the documents were in a plastic bag and not get wet.
