Azerbaijan: IRFS worries about journalist Idrak Abbasov

The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) is concerned for the safety of its employees Idrak Abbasov and his family. The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that this was stated by Emin Guseinov, Director of the IRFS, at a press conference on August 30 in the context of unidentified persons' attempts to penetrate into the journalist's car.

This is the third attempt to get into his car during the last week, Mr Abbasov himself told earlier the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. However, thanks to an alarm system, every time the unknown burglars were put to flight. Abbasov believes that these incidents have to do with his professional journalism, because there was nothing valuable in his car, but an old cassette tape, which could attract thieves.

Given the fact that Abbasov had been earlier repeatedly subjected to physical pressure and threats, the head of the IRFS has called law enforcers to find the burglars and ensure the security of Abbasov and his family.

On its part, the IRFS also intends to take technical measures to ensure the safety of Abbasov and his family. "At least, we'll install video surveillance of Idrak's house," said Guseinov.

Abbasov said that most of all he worried for the safety of his family members, who had earlier suffered because of him. Soon the school year starts; and he fears for the fate of his schoolchildren.

"Maybe, they just want to intimidate Idrak and force him to leave Azerbaijan forever with his family," said Guseinov.
