Armenian Parliament adopts suspension of official contacts with Hungary

By 96 votes "pro" and one "contra", the Armenian Parliament has adopted the statement, in which it declared the suspension of official contacts with Hungary in connection with extradition from Budapest to Baku of Ramil Safarov, sentenced for the murder of Armenian officer.

"Decree of the Azerbaijani President contradicts humanistic goals of the Strasbourg Convention of 1983 'On Transfer of Sentenced Persons' and the universal principles of human rights. The National Assembly states that the Hungarian authorities are also responsible for the incident, condemns their behaviour and at the parliamentary level suspends official relations with Hungary," pronounces the statement the Parliament.

The statement also emphasizes that prior to making the decision on extradition, "the Hungarian authorities could not be unaware that the extradition to Azerbaijan the criminal, sentenced by the Hungarian court to life imprisonment, would lead to his release."

The Armenian Parliament called on all countries, guided by democratic values, to condemn the extradition of Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan. "We expect symmetrical reaction of international parliamentary organizations and corresponding clear actions," stresses the statement.

The statement notes that by its step, Azerbaijan once again threatens regional safety, the RIA "Novosti" reports.
