Court fines two figurants of conflict in Demyanovo

The first verdicts have been passed on the cases related to the riots in the village of Demyanovo (Kirov Region). The local Alexander Babushkin and a Dagestani Akhmed Kuratmagomedov were fined; however, their legal representatives disagree with the verdict and want to appeal against it.

Let us remind you that on June 22 in the village of Demyanovo, Kirov Region, policemen were forced to use their firearms to prevent a mass brawl between local residents and about 40 natives of Northern Caucasus. The conflict, according to the police, burst out on some domestic reason on June 20, when a fight broke out between the owner of a sawmill and two Demyanovo villagers. The Kirov police opened a criminal case on the fact of beating a native of Northern Caucasus.

On September 13, Snezhana Zakharova, the magistrate judge of the precinct No. 35 of the Podosinovets District, Kirov Region, passed a verdict to Alexander Babushkin, one of the fighters. He was found guilty of an offence under Part 1, Article 116 of the Russian Criminal Code (battery) and sentenced to a fine of 7000 roubles.

A day earlier, on September 12, the same judge sentenced another figurant Akhmed Kuratmagomedov; he was sentenced under Article 115 of the Criminal Code (intentional infliction of slight bodily harm) and fined by 9000 roubles.

Akhmed Kuratmagomedov's uncle named Nukh, who is the head of the Dagestani community in Demyanovo, has treated the verdict to his nephew as unfair. "They did what they wanted. We'll challenge the sentence," he said.
