Volgograd: series of solo pickets held against nickel extraction near Khopyor River

About 25 Volgograd residents took part in a series of pickets held today against extraction of nickel in the area of the Khopyor River.

The pickets were held at 4:30-5:30 p.m. along First Longitudinal Avenue, in the section from the Voroshilov Shopping Centre to the Pedagogical University. There were more than 25 picketers, who held posters: "Save Khopyor!", "Let's protect Khopyor!" and "No to nickel in the area of Khopyor!"

"In my opinion, the action was a success. Passers-by got interested in the problem and spoke out; some of them want to join our community," Anna Isaeva, one of the organizers, a student at the Volgograd State Institute of Arts and Culture, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

Anna has noted that the action passed without incidents. "The police called me from the GUVD (Interior Department) and asked how many of us there were," she said.
