Builders of highway Alyat-Astara in Azerbaijan go on strike

On May 1, the construction of the highway Alyat-Astara was again stopped because of the strike. The protest action was held by operators of heavy equipment and workers at the site of construction works in the Salyan District.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the strike of drivers of large vehicles, contractually employed at the construction of the highway Alyat-Astara, was held on April 29. The strikers succeeded in their demand to raise wages.

On May 1, the workers who went on the strike gathered neat the offices of the Italian Company "Todini", the contractor of the project, the "haqqin.az" reports.

The participants of the protest action demanded to raise wage, improve working and living conditions. Representatives of the strikers were met by Paolo Beleratto, the head of the Azerbaijani representative office of the Company "Todini". He promised to present on May 3 the specific proposals of the Company in connection with the workers' demands.

The strike was stopped after assurances that the wages of the drivers would be raised in two times, the "Contact Online News" reports with reference to Emil Mamedov, the head of NGO "Promotion of Democracy".
