Two protesters against Armenia's accession to Customs Union attacked

Suren Sagatelyan, a member of the Board of Anti-Corruption Centre "Transparency International", and Aikak Arshamyan, the project coordinator of the Yerevan Press Club, took part in a protest action against Armenia's accession to the Customs Union. On September 5, they were brought to hospital with injuries received when they were attacked by a group of unidentified persons.

Aikak Arshamyan got his nose broken, and Suren Sagatelyan got injured to his head by the attackers. This was reported by their friend Araik Arutyunyan.

Representatives of 35 NGOs operating in Armenia have signed the statement, in which they treated the incident as a manifestation of "terror against NGOs, free media, public figures and active citizens, expressing their protest to the authorities of Armenia."

"We treat the incident as a result of the climate of impunity prevailing in Armenia, continuing daily practice of human rights violations, selective application of the law and political persecution," announces the statement posted on the website "1in.am".
