Azerbaijan stops receiving registration documents from presidential candidates

Today is the deadline for delivering signature lists for registration of presidential candidates to the CEC of Azerbaijan.

Let us remind you that on August 2, the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan appointed the next presidential election for October 9. August 3 was the official start of the process of nominating candidates for their approval by the CEC.

In total, the CEC has approved 21 candidates; three of them are already registered; 11 others have chances to get registered as they had timely submitted subscription lists.

Those registered are the incumbent president and the head of the ruling party "Yeni Azerbaijan" Ilham Aliev; the leader of "Umid" (Hope) Party and an MP of the National Assembly of Azerbaijan Igbal Agazade; and another MP Zakhid Orudj, a self-nominee.

From September 16, the phase of campaigning will be launched and end on October 8.

The leaders of oppositional parties and movements treat the nomination of Ilham Aliev for the third time in a row as illegitimate.
