Georgian President introduces three candidates for position of CEC's Chair
Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has introduced three candidates for the position of the Chair of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, including Tamar Zhvaniya, who was nominated by a number of Georgian NGOs. The CEC is to elect the Chair within five days.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that August 12, Zurab Kharatishvili, the former head of the Central Election Commission of Georgia, resigned. On August 29, his power was officially terminated.
Today, the Georgian President has introduced for the position of the Chair of the Central Election Commission Tamar Zhvaniya, the leader of the unified EU project and the UN Development Programme, Manuchar Gamkrelidze, a member of the Central Election Commission of Georgia, and Konstantin Amiradjibi, Chair of the Vake District Election Commission.
In accordance with the Georgian legislation, within five days, the Chair of the Central Election Commission is to be elected by members of the Election Commission appointed by the political parties, except for the members whose party won the recent parliamentary elections. If the CEC fails to elect the Chair, then the CEC's Chair is to be elected by the Parliament within seven calendar days.
