HRW calls on Armenian police to investigate attacks on protesters
The international Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Vladimir Gasparyan, the chief of the Armenian police, and Vagram Shaginyan, the head of the special investigation service, to bring those responsible for attacks on protesters to justice.
The concern about the increased number of attacks on participants of peaceful demonstrations and actions in Yerevan during the past three weeks was expressed by Hugh Williamson, the head of the HRW for Europe and Central Asia, in his open letter. According to his story, his staff has interviewed five victims of such attacks.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the participants of the endless sitting picket held in front of the Yerevan Mayoralty have repeatedly stated that they were terrorized by a group of 10 people who were trying to put pressure on the activists. According to their story, in spite of all their complaints, the police continue doing nothing.
On September 6, the Armenian Police issued a statement, which treated all the accusations voiced out about inaction of law enforcement bodies in disclosing crimes against participants of peaceful protests were treated as groundless.
