Georgian Parliament considers draft law to toughen penalties for false reports of terrorism
The Parliament of Georgia has initiated the legislative initiative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) toughening the law on penalty for false calls about explosive devices at different objects. The Parliament plans to consider the draft law at accelerated rate and can adopt it in the final third reading this week. This was reported by the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
The Criminal Code proposes to toughen penalty for false report of terrorism in the form of a fine, or one-two years of correctional labour, or up to two-five years of imprisonment. The draft law proposes to introduce the penalty of up to five-seven years of imprisonment for false report of terrorism committed by a group of individuals by prior agreement, repeatedly, and that inflicted significant damage.
The pro-president opposition "United National Movement" Party has accused the ruling coalition of breaking election promises, in particular, concerning liberalization of the laws. The "Georgian Dream" promised to liberalize the laws; however, instead of liberalization, it tightens them and that does not fit into the scope of their promises," emphasized Georgy Tevdoradze, an MP from the "United National Movement" Party.
