Journalist Parviz Gashimli arrested in Azerbaijan

Today, the Sabail District Court has decided to arrest the journalist Parviz Gashimli, detained on suspicion of smuggling and possession of firearms, for two months.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Parviz Gashimli, an employee of the independent newspaper "Bizim Yol" (Our Way) and director of the website moderator.az, was detained in the evening on September 17 by agents of the Ministry of National Security (MNS).

According to the lawyer Elchin Sadygov, Gashimli refuses to plead guilty and states that he is persecuted for his professional activities and advocacy work.

His colleagues also suggest that Gashimli's arrest has to do with his social activities. The "Bizim Yol" issue of September 18 posted a short statement, where the authors called on the international community and human rights organizations not to stay indifferent to the arrest of Parviz Gashimli.
