Valery Khatazhukov: militants killed in special operations in KBR were not on wanted list
The Kabardino-Balkarian Republic (KBR) is watching a continuing confrontation of law enforcers with members of the armed underground; and not only with the 50 persons who has been officially put on the wanted list. This was stated by Valery Khatazhukov, the leader of the national public human rights centre, during his meeting with the Chamber's Youth Council.
"Very often, young people are killed during special operations, who were not on the wanted list. That is, they lived openly and legally. This fact is alarming, since we do not know the exact number of them," Valery Khatazhukov said.
The human rights defender told about the origin of the underground movement in the republic and the consequences of the persecution of believers. In his opinion, this was the main cause of the events of October 13, 2005, when during the militants' attack on Nalchik, the capital of the KBR, 35 law enforcers and military men, 15 civilians and 95 attackers were killed.
He criticized the activities of the militants' adaptation commission, which "does nothing in terms of adaptation and in terms of preventing extremism and terrorism."
