Two persons detained at attempt to disrupt celebration of Hanukkah in Tbilisi

During Hanukkah celebration in Tbilisi, a group of 10 persons has attempted to disrupt the lighting of candles, which should have been executed by President of Georgia Georgy Margvelashvili. Two of the participants of the incident were detained by the police, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

The incident occurred on December 4 in Freedom Square. After Georgy Margvelashvili arrived in the square and tried to light the candles, the above group tried to stop him, shouting "It's against God! Against Georgia! Against Orthodoxy!" When the opponents of celebrating the Hanukkah tried to climb the podium, the police detained two of them, after which the celebrations continued.

The attempt to disrupt the holiday has failed, as Meyer Kozlovsky, organizer of the celebrations and the Habad community Rabbi in Georgia, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

After the ceremony of lighting the candles, a number of priests of the Georgian Orthodox Church held a protest outside the Israeli Embassy in Tbilisi, arguing that it was "an insult of Orthodox believers' feelings," Father David Isakadze, the Primate of the Church of the Holy Great Martyr Marina, told reporters.

The attempt to disrupt the Hanukkah celebration is associated with the activation of anti-European forces in Georgia, as Arnold Stepanyan, the head of the NGO "Multinational Georgia" has suggested.
