ECtHR finds power agents responsible for kidnapping Yanaev, native of Chechnya, in 2004

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ruled on the complaint "Z. and Khatueva vs. Russia", by recognizing the responsibility of Russian power structures for the kidnapping and probable death of Zhamalaily Yanaev, a native of Chechnya, who disappeared at the airport in Beslan, as Yulia Klimova, an employee of the press service of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) "Memorial", has reported.

According to the case files, on December 28, 2004, Yanaev, who was about to fly to Moscow from Beslan and who had passed the registration and passport control at the airport, was detained by a group of armed men. They introduced themselves as FSB agents and employees of the Department for Combating Organized Crime of the North-Ossetian MIA. After Yanaev was taken away from the airport, he disappeared.

According to the HRC "Memorial", Russian authorities had informed the ECtHR that the kidnappers were unidentified persons who made use of the uniform and forged documents.
