Clash in Geguti Prison in Georgia results in inmate's death
Inquiry is underway in Geguti Prison No. 14 into the murder of the convict Gigi Pertanadze, committed at night on March 4 during a scuffle of five inmates, says the Ministry of Corrections of Georgia.
"At 2:30 a.m. a fight burst out in a six-place cell among five prisoners who were present there, which ended in the death of one of them," reports the Ministry.
Supposedly, the death was caused by numerous wounds inflicted to Gigi Pertanadze in his head and neck, says the report.
So far, the office of the Public Defender of Georgia has not made any official statements on the prisoner's death. However, on March 4, the Defender's staff inspected Prison No. 14 in Geguti.
The opposition party "United National Movement" has demanded dismissal of the Minister of Corrections Sozar Subari. Party members believe that the rule of mafia bosses has been resumed in Georgian prisons.
