Dagestani native suspected of involvement in IAFs in Syria
Shamil Nurmagomedov, a native of the Tsumadin District of Dagestan, is accused of involvement in illegal armed formations (IAFs) in Syria. His advocate Sapiyat Magomedova treats the charge as illegal, stating that the confession was squeezed under pressure.
Shamil Nurmagomedov, born in 1990, a native of the village of Gigatli, Tsumadin District, was detained on December 7, 2013, in the city of Khasavyurt. The indictment states that in July 2013 Nurmagomedov voluntarily came to Syria "to take part in an IAF, which is illegitimate for that country."
In the opinion of Sapiyat Magomedova, such charge cannot be presented to Shamil Nurmagomedov.
"It should be noted that Syria is not a subject of the Russian Federation; and Russian laws are invalid in the territory of Syria, Russian laws do not apply," Sapiyat Magomedova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to the lawyer, after detention Nurmagomedov was taken to the OVD (Interior Division) of Khasavyurt, where he was exposed to psychological violence to force him to confess "of a crime he never committed."
