Film about Chechen guy presents Russia at human rights film festival in Czech Republic
In Prague, the closing ceremony of one of the major documentary film festivals on human rights "One World" took place. Russia was presented by a documentary about a Chechen guy "Zelim's Confessions". The Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Human Rights Protection was granted to Safiyat Makhmudova, a lawyer from Dagestan.
This year, the festival's programme included 106 films from 54 countries, including the above "Zelim's Confessions" by director Natalia Mikhailova, telling about the tragic fate of the 20-year-old Chechen guy, who was kidnapped, tortured and forced to take guilt for the crime he never committed.
According to Irina Gordienko, a "Novaya Gazeta" journalist and a member of the festival jury, such events have a great information value.
As noted by Khana Kulkhankova, the festival director, the "One World" was held for the 16th time. Over the years, it has gained popularity and has grown up.
The NGO "People in Need" is the organizer of the festival; it is one of the major organizations involved in Central Europe in defence of human rights. The festival is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the European Union and various embassies and corporate sponsors.
