Chechnya reopens inquiry into kidnapping of two residents in 2003

The Chechnya's Prosecutor's Office has cancelled the investigators' decision to suspend the criminal case about the kidnapping in February 2003 of two locals – brothers Aslan and Valid Djabrailov. Four years ago, the ECtHR fined Russia in response to the complaint lodged by Valid Djabrailov's relatives.

"After being kidnapped by unidentified persons, the brothers were beaten and tortured, resulting in Valid's death. Now, this criminal case is sent back for further investigation, because then investigators failed to take adequate steps to identify those involved in the kidnapping and killing Valid Djabrailov, one of the brothers, and failed with all the necessary steps required in such cases," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by a source from the Prosecutor's Office.

Let us remind you that on May 20, 2010, the ECtHR fined Russia by 100,000 euros, recognizing the Russian authorities guilty of Valid Djabrailov's death.

The head of a local human rights organization, who spoke to Djabrailovs' relatives, believes that the crime was committed by local law enforcers. Brothers' fellow-villagers assert that neither Valid nor Aslan were militants.
