In Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia's family members demand to investigate his death

The sons of the first Georgian president Zviad Gamsakhurdia have sent an appeal to the Georgian authorities demanding to conduct an objective investigation into the death of their father.

According to the version of the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, Zviad Gamsakhurdia shot and killed himself in December 1993 in one of the villages of the Samegrelo Region in western Georgia, where he together with several of his supporters was hiding from the authorities. However, many people question that version. The temporary commission to investigate the circumstances of Zviad Gamsakhurdia's death started working on November 10, 2009. In 2010, the commission rejected the version on suicidal death of the former head of the state. The Zviad Gamsakhurdia's sons believe the first Georgian president was murdered.

On March 31, the Zviad Gamsakhurdia's sons Konstantin, Georgy, and Tsotne, appealed to the Georgian authorities to reveal the cause for their father's death. They have sent the appeal to Georgian President Georgy Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Chief Prosecutor Georgy Badashvili, and Public Defender Uche Nanuashvili.
