Head of educative NGO Gasan Guseinli released in Azerbaijan
On April 2, in Azerbaijan, Gasan Guseinli, the head of the non-governmental organization (NGO) "Educative Centre 'Intellectual Citizen'", was released from custody on conditions to be "under police supervision."
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on March 31, 57-year-old Gasan Guseinli was detained in the city of Ganja (Gandzha). He is suspected of disorderly conduct committed with use of weapon or objects used as weapons. Prior to his detention, Gasan Guseinli managed to declare a provocation. According to him, a stranger approached him near the city post office and asked why he had stepped on his foot. Then, according to Gasan Guseinli, the stranger began to insult him and tried to knock him down to the ground, and at that time, a woman appeared who attacked the activist saying: "Why did he grab the man?"
According to advocate Elchin Sadygov, it was expected that on April 2, Gasan Guseinli would be brought to court to pronounce pre-trial restriction measure. "However, in the afternoon, the situation has changed. Later in the afternoon, it was announced that no court session would be held on April 2. At about 6:30 p.m., the investigator informed me that the police decided against exposing Gasan Guseinli to pre-trial arrest. He will face the pre-trial restriction measure 'transfer under police supervision'," Elchin Sadygov has stated.
