Azerbaijani NGO sues Ministry of Justice for rejected state registration
In Azerbaijan, the nongovernmental organization (NGO) "Institute of Democratic Initiatives" (IDI) has filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Justice. The NGO asserts that the Ministry has illegally denied its state registration.
The IDI was founded on November 5, 2013, by a group of lawyers and public activists with the aim to facilitate the formation of open society in Azerbaijan through promoting democratic initiatives.
Since then, the Ministry of Justice has thrice refused to register the NGO, said Akif Gurbanov, the IDI leader.
"Every time the Ministry found fault with the wording of our statutory documents; but we are convinced that we are not registered for political reasons," Gurbanov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
He said that the IDI had filed a lawsuit against the Ministry of Justice, which will be considered on April 23 by the Baku Administrative-Economic Court No. 1. The IDI asks the court to recognize the Ministry's actions as illegal and oblige it to register the NGO.
