Grozny residents are forced to go to subbotniks to clean city on eve of May Day celebrations
On the eve of May holidays, the authorities of the Chechen capital organized weekly Saturday works (subbotniks) to clean the city streets of garbage. Local entrepreneurs complain that the responsibilities of public utilities were shifted to their shoulders, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
On April 19, the first of a series of weekly subbotniks was held in Grozny. According to the administration of the Chechen capital, the work is held annually with the beginning of the spring season.
"All ministries, departments, and organizations are to remove garbage from assigned areas, whitewash trees and paint curbs. At the same time, public utilities are working on building facades redecoration and renewal of road markings. This work should be completed by May 1," an official from the city administration has said.
Local entrepreneurs claim that the authorities require them to put in order not only the buildings occupied by them, but also adjacent territories.
"I realize that, being a tenant, I am responsible for the proper state of the object. However, I believe that clearing of adjacent territories, painting of fences or something else are the responsibilities of public utilities. This is their job for which they are paid. However, for some unknown reason, it appears that I am to do this work, and, moreover, at my own expense," states Wakha, a shop owner in Grozny.
