Consideration of the case Ilgar Mamedov vs. Azerbaijani Govt is over at the ECtHR

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has completed the consideration of the complaint lodged by Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl), against the Government of Azerbaijan. The decision on the complaint will be announced on May 22, said Fuad Agaev Mamedov's advocate.

Mamedov is claiming a violation of his rights guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) in connection with his arrest on charges of mass rioting in the city of Ismailly.

"Ilgar Mamedov was arrested without charging even of primary evidence of his guilt," said Agaev.

Besides, he added, the courts protracted the consideration of complaints against the arrest, and made decisions in support of the prosecution, not even listening to the arguments of the defence. "These violations of Mamedov's rights indicate discrimination based on political affiliation, that is, because of the opposition views and activities of my client," said the lawyer.

He also said that after passing through all the judicial instances in Azerbaijan, Mamedov's conviction will be also appealed against at the ECtHR.

Let us remind you that that in March the ECtHR accepted the complaint of Tofig Yagublu, another convict on charges of mass rioting in Ismailly, to consideration.
