Chechnya prepares to celebrate Victory Day and Day of Memory and Grief
On May 9, Chechnya will hold a military parade on the occasion of the 69th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, and on May 10, on the Day of Memory and Grief, the republic will hold events of religious nature. This was reported by the Grozny city administration.
In April 2011, Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of the Chechen Republic, issued a resolution to mark the date of May 10 as the official mourning date. Until that time, Chechnya used to mark annually the Day of Memory and Grief on February 23, on the day of the beginning of the Stalin's deportation of Chechen and Ingush peoples in 1944.
"Today, in connection with the forthcoming sorrowful date, the Day of Memory and Grief of the peoples of the republic, we have started reading the Koran in all mosques and religious institutions of the republic. People commit prayers and other activities. On May 10, the mosque 'Heart of Chechnya' is to commit religious rites of 'mavlid' and 'dhikr'. Besides, in the republic, people will perform the rites of sacrifice," the Chechnen Muftiyat has announced.
