Five May 6 protesters sentenced to administrative arrest in Baku

Five participants in the protest held on May 6 against the conviction of activists of the "Nida" movement have been sentenced to administrative arrests for 15-20 days. They were found guilty of disobeying the police. Ten other persons were fined; and three other detainees were released after passing a warning.

The "Caucasian Knot" has informed that on May 6 the Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced eight "Nida" activists to real prison terms ranging from 6 to 8 years. Their supporters who gathered outside the courthouse tried to protest by chanting: "Freedom!" and "Free them!" Policemen dispersed the crowd and detained the most active protesters. In total, about 20 people were detained.

Rufat Gadjibeili, a member of the youth organization of the "Musavat" Party, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the detainees were tried today without their trusted advocates.

Rasul Jafarov, the head of the Society of Legal Protection and Education, said he treated the persecution of young people as unjustified.

"It was a peaceful protest against the unfair court verdict. On the contrary, an inadequately cruel behaviour was demonstrated by policemen in treating the protesters," said Jafarov.
