In Georgia, convicts sentenced to life imprisonment stop their hunger strike
In Georgia, a group of prisoners sentenced to life imprisonment has stopped the hunger strike. They went on it demanding to reconsider their cases and to expend the amnesty law on them. MP Shalva Shavgulidze believes that the Parliament will consider by the fall the issue to adopt necessary legislative amendments taking into account the demands voiced by the hunger-strikers.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 3, 47 inmates of the Gldani Prison No. 8 in Tbilisi and several inmates of the prison No. 6 in Rustavi went on hunger strike demanding that the government should adopt a number of amendments to the Law "On Amnesty" and to reduce the 25-year limit for early release from life imprisonment to 15 years. On June 9, in Tbilisi, about 50 persons attended the rally to support the hunger-strikers.
The prisoners have decided to stop their hunger strike after the meeting with MPs, who reviewed their demands. This was reported on June 10 by the IA "Medianews".
The Parliament of Georgia will consider the prisoners' demands concerning life imprisonment and will adopt by the fall the appropriate legislative amendments to be discussed in the Committee on Legal Affairs. This was reported by the "Georgia-Online" with reference to Georgian MP Shalva Shavgulidze.
